Description
Celtic bust of a probable deity or noble man, made with limestone and found by the previous owner in 1973 in Burgundy (France). It was a part of a big stela measuring around two meters, which wasn’t able to preserve since it lay in a little stream. Kept for more than 40 years by the owner who had it discovered, this is definitely a museum masterpiece and a rare testimony of the past.
Like many busts from this period and culture, it shows traits that will be then taken back by cubist artists, with prominent cheekbones and chin in a pure style, two almond eyes with apparent pupils and a nose and a mouth thinly carved. This masterpiece also features a necklace or a torc with something hanged below (maybe a medaillon).
Very unique testimony of Celtic art in France.
Some erosion coming from the burying and water streaming, however not affecting the general beauty of this work.
