Description

Little ceramic mother goddess from Trypillian culture, unearthed at Kolomoyshchina in Ukraine and dating  back from the 4th millenium B.C. This type is affiliated to later type of such a figurines and can be dated between 3000 and 3500 B.C.

As a late stage figurine from this culture, this specimen share specific design: two eyes depicted with incisions, a prominent nose, no arm, two breasts, wide hips and buttocks, a terminal cone lightly raised at the end to figure her legs and feet.

These idoles were really stylized, highlighting only reproduction attributes (breasts and steatopygia) as well as a distinctive face shape inherited from an older Bird goddess (cf. “Goddesses and God of Old Europe”, Marija Gimbutas). Some incisions were done in order to reveal her pubic area.

Such small specimen are scarce to find with a good state of preservation. Our figurine only shows a little chip and the right hip. All the excavation’s patina is still present.
