Description
This mother goddess had been made from white marble and comes from the Varna area, dating back from the 5th millenium B.C.
It is clearly linked to the Gumelnita – Karanovo culture through a common feature: use of pierced holes to symbolize some head’s elements (ears, eyes, mouth…). Indeed , our specimen clearly depicts two eyes with slightly different diameter. The head is very schematic and shaped as a kind of rectangle with some rounded edges. Arms are lying along her body and we can distinguished to female attributes: the pubic triangle as well as her breasts. The stone chosen to make this idole is of very high quality, thinly polished with some very slight erosion spots.
Condition
Quality polishing on a first grade white marble. Awesome specimen.
Provenance
This idole comes from an old french private collection Assier (found in the 1930’s near Varna).
