Description

This marble idol comes from the Varna region, nowadays Bulgaria, and dates approximately from the 5th millennium B.C.
Apart from relatively flat and poorly defined breasts, steatopygia on the lower body (belly to the legs) remains very present. Indeed, we have here all the symbolism of the goddess, with her attributes (pubic triangle, wide hips) and little realism. Indeed, realism only arrives during antiquity as a desire to supplant and perfect reality (as in Greece or ancient Rome).
Its arms are delimited along the body. Its head is shaped into a ball without any particular detail. The symmetry of this piece is close to perfect.

Condition

A few bumps, slight erosion holes, earth encrustation, but a complete and beautiful piece.

Provenance

Old French Assier private collection (collected in the first half of the 20th century).
