Description

This black stone idol comes from the Sesklo region, nowadays Greece, and dates approximately from the 5th – 6th millennium B.C.
This figure is ultra schematic and therefore in pure symbolism. It is polished and gives a mirror aspect to the rock on certain less eroded parts (in particular on a small vein on the back part which tends towards grey). This whole idol has been polished for a long time to form the various details (hips, pubis, head, breasts formed from a single block). It was probably a very precious idol, according to the noble material used (potentially semi-precious) and the polishing time it may have required.

Condition

Very nice polish. An asperity linked to a vein on the back.

Provenance

Old French Assier private collection (collected in the first half of the 20th century).
