Description
Retouched knapped balkanic brown flint excavated in Ukraine and dating from around the 5th to 6th millenium (Cucuteni-Trypillian culture).
The blade is a typical Levallois flake that has been detached from a nucleus (core) which had been prepared (specifically knapped) for this purpose. Such nucleus are called “Livre de beurre” because of the similarity with the shape of the vessel that was used to make butter during the XIXth century. They were mainly used to detach one thin and big flake to make slightly curved blades of big size (150 to 200 mm). Edge are often slightly knapped by pressure with softer material (bone, wood…). Our blade features very thin knapped parrallel retouches, with some light superposition from times to times, all over the piece. The percussion bulb is well visible. This kind of blade shows the dexterity and craftmanship that our ancestor possessed. Besides, there were exported everywhere in Europe, as it has been unveiled regarding the Grand-Pressigny lithic industry in France.
Very appealing flake with a light patina and rest of organic traces remaining from cutting work. Only one dent missing else flawless. Very scarce regarding the state of preservation and length.
